Thank you for your letter of 3rd April in which you draw our attention to site rent.

According to John McAuley in his book "Capital and Wealth in Australia's Postwar National Balance Sheets" (Longman Cheshire} any attempt to make a tax on land a sole tax is doomed to failure in a modern economy where so many industries and people do not make use of land and cannot be taxed. It would be of interest to know whether your proposal has been tried in any other country.
